Officer Airlifted With Critical Injuries After Being Struck By Driver On I-270 In Maryland: PD

A Montgomery County Police officer suffered critical injuries after being struck by a reportedly impaired driver on I-270 early on Wednesday morning.

Two people are in custody after an officer was struck at around 4 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 18 in the northbound lanes on I-270 between Watkins Mill Road and north of Middlebrook Road in Gaithersburg, according to a Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson. 

The officer was airlifted to an area hospital with critical, life-threatening injuries.

Following the crash, several northbound lanes on I-270 were blocked as police investigated and cleared the scene, backing up traffic for miles.

The driver and a second person were taken into custody following the crash, which remains under investigation.
